Ireland has only qualified for the final stages of major soccer tournaments on just four occasions. The Euro 1988 Finals in Germany, the 1990 World Cup in Italy, the 1994 World Cup in USA, and the 2002 World Cup in Japan and South Korea. Over the decades there have been many near misses and hard luck stories for the Irish. Here are the details of all of the Irish soccer qualifying campaigns.

Women’s Soccer in Ireland

Women’s soccer in Ireland, along with the rest of the World, is growing rapidly. Across the globe it is estimated that the genders are rapidly approaching parity in terms of numbers playing the game. In Ireland this has been recognised by the FAI and the Women’s Football Association of Ireland is being fully integrated at all levels into the main governing body. Learn more about Women’s Soccer in Ireland.

Futsal in Ireland

Futsal is a form of indoor soccer that began in South America in the 1930’s and is now played in many countries across the World. In recognition of this FIFA and UEFA have established international competitions to reflect this. The FAI has launched a strategic plan to foster Futsal as a complementary form of football within the overall game of soccer in Ireland. Read more about Futsal in Ireland.

Irish Football Grounds

The Lansdowne Road Stadium Development Company (LRSDC) – a joint venture between the FAI and the IRFU oversaw the completion of the first soccer stadium in Ireland to meet the criteria for a UEFA Elite Stadium. The Aviva Stadium was built upon the site of the original Lansdowne Road football ground and was completed in April 2010.
