Galway United FC Introduction

Galway United FC is a League of Ireland soccer football club based in Galway City. The club was formed in 1937 in the Claddagh district. Originally known as Galway rovers, United began it’s League of Ireland existence in 1977 with a home match at Terryland Park against St Pat’s. The match ended in a 0 – 0 draw and the club finished in the second last position in the league. For the 1981/82 season the club changed it’s name to Galway United

For the first few years the club struggled to make any significant impact in the League of Ireland and the FAI Cup. The 1985/86 season was the the best league campaign by the West of Ireland outfit when they were runners-up to Shamrock Rovers. The club lost just three matches during the season however the number of draws (seven) proved to be the club’s undoing.

In 1991 Galway United recorded their greatest ever triumph when the club lifted the FAI Cup. Their old nemesis Shamrock Rovers provided the opposition in the final that was held in Lansdowne Road (now the Aviva Stadium). The match was a tight affair and was decided late on when Johnny Glynn scored the winner with just minutes remaining

The clubs’ nickname is ‘the Tribesmen’.
