Irish Footballers that Played for Liverpool - Ernie McCappin
Ernie McCappin - Introduction
Ernest 'Ernie' McCappin was born on 26 July 1914 in Lurgan, Northern Ireland. He was a right-half and played junior football for Lisburn and for Cliftonville in the Irish League. Along with William Hood, McCappin signed for Liverpool FC on 9 March 1937. During his time at Anfield he was understudy to Matt Busby who was on the books of Liverpool at that time.

Ernie McCappin never managed to make a first team appearance for Liverpool however he made a number of appearances for the A team and the reserves.
McCappin played in a friendly match against Cliftonville as part of the transfer arrangements covering the signing of Ernie and William Hood. Liverpool won 8 - 2 and McCappin scored the fifth goal.
While playing for the reserves Ernie McCappin won the Liverpool Senior Cup in May 1937. Liverpool beat Marine 4 - 0. McCappin scored his only goal for the reserves in a 4 - 0 victory over Birmingham City. He scored the first goal of the match.
In June 1938 Ernie left Liverpool FC on a free transfer and joined Irish League club Linfield FC as a professional on 21st June 1938.
Ernie McCappin - Northern Ireland Career
There is no record of Ernie McCappin having made any appearances for Ireland at the senior international level however he did win one cap at amateur level. On 13 February 1937 he was part of an Irish team that beat England 5 - 1. Ernie also won a cap representing the Irish league against the Scottish League on 30 August. The Irish won the match 1-0.
