Irish Footballer that Played for Man United - Sammy McMillan

Sammy McMillan - Introduction

Sammy McMillan was born in Belfast, Northern Ireland on 20 September 1941. He was a product of the famous Boyland Youth football club. McMillan crossed the Irish Sea to Matt Busby's Manchester United in December 1957, just a couple of months before the tragic Munich air disaster.

Sammy McMillan & Manchester United

Sammy McMillan made his debut for Manchester United on 4 November 1961 against Sheffield Wednesday. It was a losing debut as United lost 3 - 1 at Hillsborough. McMillan started up front alongside Bobby Charlton and Dennis Viollet.

Busby retained the Belfast man for the next two league matches and Sammy McMillan scored his first goal for Manchester United on 18 November 1961 against Ipswich Town at Portman Road. Unfortunately for McMillan he was on the losing side again as United lost 4 - 1.

McMillan did not feature again for United until 4 April 1962 in a match away to Leicester City. Despite two goals from the young Northern Irishman yet again he was on the losing side. It wasn't until a week later, when United thrashed

Ipswich Town 5 - 0 at Old Trafford, that Sammy McMillan tasted success with Manchester United. McMillan went on to make a total of 11 appearances in the 1961/62 season and he scored six goals. Despite making three starts early in 1962/63 season Sammy McMillan played his last match for Manchester United on 13 October 1962 against Blackburn Rovers.

Despite being a fast and versatile forward with a reasonable strike rate McMillan's career with the Reds was effectively over. Just over a year later Sammy McMillan left Old Trafford to sign for Wrexham for a transfer of £8,000.

Sammy McMillan - Northern Ireland Career

Sammy McMillan made his Northern Ireland debut on 20 October 1962 at Windsor Park in a 1 - 3 loss to England. He made his second and last Irish appearance in the following month at Hampden Park against Scotland. Unfortunately for McMillan he did not experience an international victory as the Scots ran out 5 - 1 winners. McMillan did not manage to score for Northern Ireland.
