Walter McMillen - Introduction

Walter McMillen was a footballer from Belfast. He had established himself in the football world with Clftonville and was a transfer target for Arsenal. Despite the interest from the Londoners Walter McMillen signed for Manchester United in 1933.

Walter McMillen & Manchester United

McMillen made his debut for Manchester United on 16 September 1933 in a Second Division match against Brentford at Griffen Park. In front of 17,000 fans the match ended in a 3-4 win for the Reds. Despite this victory United languished near the bottom of the table with the threat of relegation to the Third Division a real possibility. Walter McMillen retained his position in defence for the rest of the season as United narrowly avoided relegation.

During his short career with United he scored two goals. Walter McMillen scored his first goal for Manchester United on 14 April 1934. He scored the opening goal in a 2-0 defeat of Port Vale in a league match. His second and last goal for United was scored almost a year later in a 3-4 defeat at Old Trafford to Burnley.

This was McMillen's last appearance in the Manchester United first team. Following a period in the United reserves Walter McMillen transferred to Chesterfield in December 1936 for a transfer fee of £2,000.

Walter McMillen - Northern Ireland Career

Walter McMillen made his debut for Northern Ireland after he had signed for Manchester United on 14 October 1933 in a 0-3 defeat at Windsor Park against England. McMillen went on to earn a total of seven Irish caps. His second international cap was notable for two reasons. Firstly very few people gave the Irish any hope of beating a strong Scotland team however the Irish ran out 2-1 winners despite being reduced to ten men.

The second reason was that McMillen replaced injured goalkeeper, Elisha Scott, and made a number of crucial saves to help earn a great win for the Irish. Walter McMillen won his seventh and last cap in a similar fashion to his first cap, a heavy (7-0) defeat at the hands of the English.
