History of Soccer in Cork

County Cork has a rich and proud, if somewhat strange, tradition of soccer in Ireland. Through the years the county has produced a number of great Irish international footballers. In 1924 Fordsons became Corks’ first soccer team in the League of Ireland. Fordsons represented the Ford Motor Company that was based in Cork at the time. Fordsons won the Cup in 1926 but in the 1930’s the football club changed its’ name to Cork FC. This was the beginning of a series on name changes. The club has since competed under the following names – Cork City, Cork United and Cork Athletic.

In 1948 the club was replaced in the soccer league by Cork Hibernians. In 1951 Hibs were joined in the league by Evergreen United FC (who had previously been known as Cork Bohemians) who maintained the Cork footballing tradition by changing their name to Cork Celtic in 1959. Although Cork Hibernians won the League of Ireland in 1971 and the Cup in 1974 the soccer club went out of business in 1976 in a somewhat dramatic fashion.

Cork Hibernians FC was replaced in the league by Albert Rovers FC in the same year. Less than a year later the name-change bug bit and the soccer club became known as Cork Alberts FC. In 1979 Alberts became known as Cork United FC and in the same year the Cork Celtic soccer club was dissolved. In 1982 the Cork United club was expelled from the league however it wasn’t long before the county was represented in the League of Ireland again. Cork City FC was formed and elected to the league in 1984. Consistently Cork City has some of the highest football match attendances in the league at their ground Turners Cross.

There have been a number of great Cork soccer players that have represented the Republic of Ireland Senior International team. Two of the most notable examples are Denis Irwin and Roy Keane.
