Sligo Rovers FC Introduction

Sligo Rovers FC is a League of Ireland soccer football club based in Sligo Town. The club was formed in 1928 from the combination of Sligo Blues and Sligo Town. Rovers were elected to the League of Ireland for the 1934/35 season and the club finished a highly creditable third place. Sligo Rovers home ground is the Showgrounds with a capacity of 5,500.

Sligo Rovers FC has won the League of Ireland on two occasions. The first time the club was crowned champions was in the 1936/37 when Rovers eclipsed Dundalk FC, Waterford FC, and Bray Unknowns (all finished on 24 points) by ten points. The margin of victory for the second League of Ireland victory in the 1976/77 season was just one point ahead of Bohs.

Sligo Rovers have also won the FAI Cup on two occasions also. The first time was in 1983 when Rovers defeated Bohemians 2-1 at Dalymount Park. Rovers raised the Cup for the second time in 1994 beating Derry City 1-0 at Lansdowne Road (now known as the Aviva Stadium).

The clubs’ nickname is ‘the Bit O’ Red’.

How to Get to The Showgrounds – Sligo Rovers FC Football Ground

From Dublin
Coming into Sligo on the N4 dual carriageway, follow the signs for town centre. Turn left at the first set of traffic lights. Continue on for approximately half a mile going up Churchill – the Showgrounds are on the right.

From Donegal
Coming into Sligo on the N4, follow the sign posts for Dublin. Cross the river at Hughes Bridge and keep to the left hand lane. Cross over the bridge, move into right hand lane until you reach the third set of traffic lights where there is a turning lane. Take the right-hand turn and continue up Church Hill to the football ground.

Train & Bus
Leave the railway / bus station, cross the road and proceed straight ahead up Wolfe Tone Street. At the end of the street turn right up Church Hill – the Showgrounds are about 0.5 mile on the right.

Car Parking
There is street parking for cars available in the Church Hill area as well as a pay car park in the grounds of the Cathedral on Mail Coach Road. Note that for big games the Gardai will often prohibit parking on Church Hill. There is currently no car parking in the ground.
