Sporting Fingal FC Introduction

Sporting Fingal FC is a League of Ireland soccer football club based in Santry, Dublin 9. The club was formed in 2007 making it the newest member club in the Premier League of Ireland. The club was established as part of the Fingal County Council’s overall Football Development Plan. The plan comprises three elements – the development of a Fingal Football Academy, the creation of a senior soccer club for the entire County and the eventual development of a stadium for County Fingal.

“Community is everything in this Club”, explained David O’Connor, Fingal County Manager, at the launch of the club in Corduff during February 2008. “Community is the foundation on which the club and our football development plan are built and each football club in Fingal can rightfully feel that Sporting Fingal FC is their League of Ireland club.”

While Sporting Fingal is a very young club it has already reached incredible footballing heights. Kilkenny City AFC’s withdrawal from the League of Ireland presented an unexpectedly early opportunity to the fledgling club to make it’s debut in the League of Ireland First Division in 2008. Fingal finished in a very creditable third place.

The following season brought very real tangible success on the football pitch. Sporting Fingal qualified for the promotion play-offs and defeated Premier League team Bray Wanderers 4-2 in a two-legged affair. The fairy tale continued when Sporting Fingal raised the FAI Cup at Tallaght Stadium on 22 November 2009.

Having beaten Bray Wanderers in the semi-final (again by a scoreline of 4-2) Fingal was within five minutes of losing to Sligo Rovers in the final when Colm James scored a very late equaliser from the penalty spot. Just when extra time looked a certainty up popped Gary O’Neill with a last minute winner.
