Republic of Ireland Football Team Fixtures & Results for 2016The Republic of Ireland began 2016 by playing a home friendly against Switzerland in March. This was the first of four friendlies that Irish manager, Martin O’Neill, used to prepare for Ireland’s participation in a second successive European finals. A win against the Swiss was followed by two draws and a disappointing loss in Cork to Belarus. This was an inauspicious send of for the Irish team as they faced into the toughest group at the Euro 2016 in France. An initial draw against Sweden was followed up by a heavy defeat to then fancied Belgians. In a do-or-die tie a superb goal from Robbie Brady gave Ireland a great win against mighty Italy. This was enough for Ireland to qualify for the next round against the hosts, France. Despite a bright start the Irish were outclassed and lost 2-1 but headed home with their heads held high. Ireland began the 2018 World Cup qualification campaign with a draw away to Serbia and a very scrappy 1-0 win at the Aviva Stadium over Georgia. The final match of 2016 was an inspiring 1-0 victory over Austria in Vienna also in a World Cup qualifier. That victory saw the Irish rise to the top of the Group D table.
