Republic of Ireland v Germany Football ResultsThe Republic of Ireland has played Germany on 18 occasions. Following WW II the German nation was split into two parts and for 45 years (from 1945 to 1990) there were two German national football teams – West Germany and East Germany. Ireland never played the East German football team. Therefore all references below refer to the unified German team before 1945 and after 1990, and to West Germany between those dates. Ireland’s record against this football superpower is very respectable with six wins, four draws, and eight losses to the Germans. Curiously Ireland and Germany had not met in a competitive match until they met in a group match at the 2002 World Cup Finals in Japan. The two subsequent meetings have also been competitive matches in the Euro 2008 qualifiers. Another curiosity about meetings between the two countries is that the 18 matches between the two countries have been played in 12 different venues. This is largely due to the fact that the Germans have a policy of moving their home international matches around Germany. Irish teams have played against Germany in eight different German cities since the countries first met in 1935. Republic of Ireland Match Results Against Germany
