St John Bosco FC |
St John Bosco FC is a Dublin soccer football club based in Drimnagh on the south side of the city. The club was formed back in 1957. In the late 1960’s some players from St John Bosco were garnering interest from soccer scouts for English professional football clubs. One of the players attracting attention was Jimmy Holmes who signed for Coventry City FC. He went on to make his debut for the Senior Irish International soccer team at the age of 17 years before he made his debut for Coventry City. Jimmy Holmes holds the record for the fastest accumulation of 25 international caps. Unfortunately his soccer career was ended when he suffered a very serious injury playing for the Republic of Ireland against Bulgaria in 1979.
The following St John Bosco FC soccer players were capped for the Republic of Ireland senior team: Tony Dunne (33 caps); Jimmy Holmes (30 caps); John Devine (13 caps); Jackie Hennessy (5 caps); Freddie Strahan (5 caps); Brendan McNally (3 caps); Eric Barber (2 caps); Alan Quinn (2 caps); Christy Doyle (1 caps). St John Bosco FC compete in the Athletic Union League, the Dublin and District Schoolboys League and the South Dublin Football League. The club’s teams play their home soccer matches on the football pitch at Benmadigan Road, Crumlin, Dublin 12 |
