1992 European Football Championship – Irish Qualifying Campaign
In the qualifier group 7 for the 1992 European Football Championship the Republic of Ireland were drawn with England, Poland and Turkey with only one team to qualify.
Ireland got off to a sparkling start by beating Turkey at Lansdowne Road (now Aviva Stadium) 5-0. John Aldridge scored a hat trick of goals in addition to single efforts from David O’Leary and Niall Quinn. This was followed up by two draws with England. On both occasions England took a 1-0 lead only to be hauled back by the Irish. The group would come down to how Ireland and England performed Poland and Turkey.
Unfortunately Ireland could not manage to beat Poland at home in May 1991 and England had already beaten them in the previous October at Wembley. Advantage England.
In the remaining qualifier soccer games Ireland matched English performances with an away draw with Poland and a 1-3 win away against Turkey.
In this Euro 1992 qualifying group the Irish scored a lot of goals (13 versus 7 scored by England) and if Ireland and England had ended level on points the Republic would have qualified for Euro 92 on goal difference.
Alas the home performance against Poland was to prove decisive and England qualified by a margin of one point.
