Avenue United FC |
| Avenue United FC is a County Clare soccer club that was established in 1983 by founding members David Connellan, Anthony McMahon, Sean Downes and Gerard O’Grady. The club entered a team into Division 2 of the Clare & District Soccer League. The team won that division without losing a match and then went on to win Division 1 the next season. This earned Avenue United promotion to the Premier League. Further success followed when the club won an unprecedented clean sweep of the Premier League & Shield, the Haughey Cup, Munster & FAI Clare Area Finals.
In later years Avenue fielded successful youths and ‘B’ teams, and after that schoolboys teams. In 1990 Avenue United became the first Clare Club ever to reach the FAI Junior Cup Final at Dalymount Park, where they were beaten 2-0 by Cherry Orchard side. In 1996 the club expanded by steadily adding schoolboys teams and have since fielded Under 8’s, Under 10’s, Under 11’s, Under 12’s, Under 13’s, Under 14’s, Under 15’s, Under 16’s, Under 17’s and Youths (Under 18’s) teams. United also runs a successful Clare Champion sponsored ‘Avenue Academy’ for up to one hundred and forty 6 to 10 year olds. |
