Innishvilla AFC |
Innishvilla AFC is a soccer club based in Innishannon in county Cork. It draws football players from Innishannon, and local areas such as Ballinhassig and Ballinspittle. The club began life in 1967 as Innishannon Soccer Club. The clubs’ first full game was a friendly match against CMP Dairies on a local GAA football pitch. The football club entered the local Kyre League, which consisted of five soccer teams. In 1971 the Club entered the Cork Athletic League and home football matches were played on a pitch on the land owned by local Mr. Billy Burns. The club had its’ first success on the soccer pitch In 1974 when Innishannon won its’ section in Division 3 of the Cork AUL. Eventually the club lost out to Victoria Athletic in the play-offs.Due to competition for players from the local GAA club there was a temporary dissolution of the club in 1975. Some members went to other nearby soccer clubs such as Crossbarry, Killeady and Bandon. In the early 80’s the Innishannon soccer club reformed and competed in the Cork AUL. In the early 90’s the football club committee decided to form a youth’s team in order to create a conveyor belt of footballers for the AUL teams. The incoming committee for the 1990/91 season decided that the forming of a Youth’s team might help to improve matters. Their first season was a great success and included a player to later play for the Cork AUL team, Peter Jones. The second season proved very difficult with the team getting very little support from the player’s parents. The financial burden became too great and the Youth team was scrapped prior to the 1992/93 season. The club also has generated a very successful underage soccer system. The underage club was a collaboration between the two clubs in the parish, Innishannon and Knockavilla and this gave rise to the current name – Innishvilla AFC. Innishvilla underage teams have beaten such notable soccer teams as College Corinthians and Rockmount (the club that nurtured Roy Keane in his formative football years). Currently Innishvilla has clubs at U11, U12, U13, U14, U15, U16 and a youth Team all competing at a high level in the Cork Schoolboys League and Cork Youth League respectively. In recent years Innishvilla entered a schoolgirls team to the U11 division for the first time ever. The Junior team currently plays football at the highest level in the Cork AUL Division 1. |
