UCD AFC |
UCD AFC is a League of Ireland Premier Division soccer club based in Dublin. Known then as the Catholic University Medical School Cecilia Street Football Club it was founded in 1895. The club’s first ever match was in October 1895 against Bohemians B losing 1-0. The club lost 6-2 in an early round to Shamrock Rovers in the very first FAI Cup competition. In 1914 UCD First tasted success on the football pitch when they won the inaugural Collingwood Cup, the Irish collegiate championships. In 1970 UCD AFC was elected to the second tier division in the League of Ireland. During 1976 the club won the Collingwood cup yet again when a certain Kevin Moran starred. After he graduated from UCD Moran went on to sign for Pegasus, a club formed by, and for, graduates of the college. At the time graduates could not play for UCD AFC. Kevin Moran signed professional papers for Manchester United in 1977. In the 1983/84 season UCD won the FAI Cup thus qualifying for the European Cup Winners Cup drawing English giants Everton FC. In a heroic display over two legs the club were eased out of the competition 1-0 on aggregate. Mount Merrion UCD Youths Football Club are the feeder club to the UCD First Team. Both clubs joined together in recent years with the aim to work closely together to promote the development of soccer in the local area. |
