Irish Soccer Statistics & Facts – Consecutive Wins / Losses / Draws

The following are some interesting statistics, facts and information about the Republic of Ireland soccer team and Irish football in general.

Republic of Ireland’s Longest Losing Streak Statistics

On seven separate occasions the Irish international soccer team lost five consecutive football matches. The first of these began in April 1934 when the Irish Free State team lost to Holland in a World Cup qualifier and was followed by four losses in friendly matches.

The latest Irish five match losing streak began on 15 November 1995 in a 1996 Euro qualifier against Portugal followed by a Euro play-off loss against the Dutch again, and then three losses in friendly matches.

Ireland’s Longest Winning Streak Statistics

The Republic of Ireland’s longest winning streak is eight matches. Under Jack Charlton the Irish team began the winning streak in May 1987 with a 1-0 win over soccer giants Brazil, and finished a year later with a win in a friendly match with Poland.

During the eight matches there were seven home matches, five friendlies, three Euro 1988 qualifiers, two of them against Luxembourg.

Republic of Ireland’s Longest Losing Streak in Competitive Matches

For a two year period in the early 1970’s Ireland lost all of it’s competitive soccer matches. The record sequence of competitive match losses for the Republic of Ireland is six matches. The Irish lost five of it’s six 1972 Euro qualification matches in a row (Manager – Mick Meagan) plus it’s first 1974 World Cup Qualification match (Manager – Liam Tuohy). This losing sequence, that began with a loss away to Sweden on 28 October 1970, only ended on 15 November 1972 when Ireland defeated France at Dalymount Park. The losing sequence was as follows: Sweden (A); Italy (A); Italy (H); Austria (H); Austria (A); Soviet Union (H).

Ireland’s Longest Winning Streak in Competitive Matches

The Republic of Ireland’s longest winning sequence in competitive soccer matches is five wins while Jack Charlton was manager of the Irish team. Big Jack’s team won five 1990 World Cup Qualification matches in a row between 28 April 1989 and 15 November 1989. This sequence of victories went a long way to ensuring that Ireland qualified for the World Cup Finals for the first time ever. This record of consecutive victories was as follows: Spain (H); Malta (H); Hungary (H); Northern Ireland (H); Malta (A). Ireland scored ten goals and conceded none.

Republic of Ireland’s Longest Sequence of Draws in Competitive Matches

Between 9 October 1999 and 7 October 2000 the Republic of Ireland drew five consecutive competitive football matches. Mick McCarthy was the Irish manager when the team drew a Euro 2000 qualifier, two Euro 2000 play-off matches with Turkey, and two 2002 World Cup qualifiers away to Portugal and Holland.

The drawing sequence ended on 11 October 2000 when Ireland beat Estonia 2-0 at Lansdowne Road (now Aviva Stadium). The Irish record drawing sequence was as follows: Macedonia (A); Turkey (H); Turkey (A); Holland (A); Portugal (A).
