Every Republic of Ireland Senior Football Team Result

At Soccer-Ireland.Com we have compiled a list of each soccer result of every international match that the Irish senior football team has ever played. In the pages listed below we have included the match results in chronological order starting with the first international matches in 1924 when the Republic of Ireland was known as the Irish Free State.

First Irish International Football Match

The first official international match played by the twenty-six counties was on the 28th May 1924 against Bulgaria at the Paris Olympics. The Irish Free State won the match and the result was 1-0. Paddy Duncan, who played for St James Gate, scored the winning goal. This victory meant that the side qualified for the a quarter-final match against the Netherlands. The Free state lost this match 2-1.

Ireland International Football Results

The Irish national soccer team originally known as the ‘Irish Free State’ until 1936. Thereafter the team was known as ‘Ireland’ however this was causing confusion with the Longer established IFA’s representative team, Northern Ireland.

For a period both the FAI and the IFA laid claim to the Irish national team and both selected players from the entire island of Ireland. To put an end to this confusion FIFA determined that the team representing the twenty-six counties would from 1953 onward would be known as the ‘Republic of Ireland’.

For the purpose of convenience in our lists of results of the national soccer team, linked below, are referred to as ‘Ireland’.
