Republic of Ireland v Gibraltar Football Results

Although the Gibraltar FA was formed in 1895 it only became an affiliate of UEFA in 2013 and at the time of writing had not been accepted as an affiliate of FIFA. In their first competitive match the Gibraltarians were beaten 7-0 by Poland in their opening match of the Euro 2016 qualifiers.

In Ireland’s second match in the Euro 2016 qualifiers Ireland played the Gibraltarians for the first time ever. As anticipated the Irish beat the football minnows easily by a 7-0 margin. A hat trick in the first 17 minutes by Ireland’s captain Robbie Keane set the tone as Ireland ran out easy winners.

Two further goals from James McClean, one from Wes Hoolahan, and a bizarre own goal by Gibraltar goalkeeper Perez led to Ireland’s second highest winning margin in a senior international football match.

In their first two full competitive international matches the Gibraltarians had conceded 14 goals without reply. Following Ireland’s second meeting with Gibraltar in September 2015 (a 4-0 win for the Irish) the fledgling international football minnows had conceded 38 goals and had scored just a single goal, against Scotland.
