Republic of Ireland v Moldova Football Results

Ireland first played Moldova in a football match in October 2019. The two teams had been drawn in Group D of the 2018 World Cup qualifiers. At the time of the draw Ireland was ranked 52 and Moldova was ranked in the FIFA World rankings.

The two teams met for the first time at the Zimbru Stadium in Chisina and the evening couldn’t have started more brightly for the Irish manager, Martin O’Neill, as Shane Long scored within a couple of minutes of the kick-off.

Unfortunately the Moldovans equalised just on the stroke of half time. A Irish win was widely expected  and a pair of second half goals from James McClean duly delivered the victory.

The next meeting between Ireland and Moldova took place a year later in the return fixture in Dublin. Two first half goals from Daryl Murphy secured a 2-0 victory for the Irish.
