History of Wexford Football League

Wexford county has a long soccer tradition dating back to 1912 when Billy Lacey from Enniscorthy signed for Liverpool FC. Lacey first recorded soccer team in Wexford is John St Volunteers, a converted GAA football team. In 1928, one year after the club was formed, it went on to reach the Leinster Junior Cup Final losing by the odd goal in three to Dundalk. Wexford’s first proper soccer club was St Cormacs founded in 1958.

In 1959, following a meeting in a hotel in Enniscorthy, five clubs decided to form a dedicated Wexford soccer league. The five clubs represented were Ballymoney, Enniscorthy, Gorey, St Cormacs, and St Johns Athletic. The next year, in a meeting attended by officials from the Leinster Football Association and officials from the Football Association of Ireland, the draw for the inaugural Cup was held. Approval was also given to the the establishment of the Wexford and District League. At this stage the league included soccer clubs from County Carlow.

In terms of achievements on the soccer pitch Wexford football history was made in 1982 when New Ross Celtic became the first Wexford soccer club to win the Leinster Junior Cup.

The Wexford Football League is affiliated to the Leinster Football Association and the Football Association of Ireland.
