Bray Wanderers FC |
Bray Wanderers FC IntroductionBray Wanderers FC is a League of Ireland soccer football club based in Bray, County Wicklow. The club was originally formed in 1922 but disbanded in the 1930’s. Bray Wanderers came back into existence in 1942. The club’s nickname is the Seagulls. Bray Wanderers play their home matches at the Carlisle Grounds. Originally opened in 1862 the venue was officially named the Carlisle Cricket and Archery Ground in honour of the 7th Earl of Carlisle who performed the opening ceremony in his capacity as Lord Lieutenant of Ireland. The ground was first used for soccer by former League of Ireland side Bray Unknowns. The first League of Ireland match at the Carlisle Grounds was was a 2-2 draw between Unknowns and Dundalk FC in the 1929. Bray Wanderers began playing home matches at the Carlisle Grounds when the club was reformed in 1942. However the Grounds were unavailable for two seasons from 1946 to 1948 so Wanderers played their home games at Corke Abbey in Woodbrook. Bray Wanderers greatest successes on the football pitch include to victories in the FAI Cup. The club first won the Cup in 1990 with a 3-0 win over non-league St Francis FC. It was the first time that the FAI Cup Final was played at Lansdowne Road (now the Aviva Stadium). Bray won the cup for the second time in 1999 when they defeated Finn Harps 2-1 after a second replay. Unfortunately, Wanderers created history by becoming the first club to win the Cup and to be relegated in the same year. |
