2010 First Division Match Results – Airtricity League Series 1

The results for the first series of matches in the Airtricity League of Ireland First Division are detailed below.

The First Division kicked off with a match up between two teams that were in the Premier Division last season. Derry City played host to the reinvented Cork City aka Cork City Foras Co-op. Tommy Dunne, the Cork manager, could only muster up 13 players to tog out for the match. In the first couple of minutes of the second half Davin O’Neill scored the first ever goal for Cork City Foras to give the southerners a 1-0 lead. Derry City were only behind for a short time as Emmett Friars equalised in the 63rd with a headed goal.

Karl Bermingham gave visiting Monaghan United a surprise lead over Shelbourne in the Tolka Park in the eighteenth minute. Shelbourne came out in the second half with renewed determination to get something out of the game. The seemingly inevitable equaliser came when Eric Foley smashed home a free kick in the 80th minute.

Mervue United and Limerick played out a 1-1 draw at Terryland Park. The visitors took the lead halfway through the opening 45 minutes through John Tierney. Kevin Barrett equalised for the home team when the referees’ assistant indicated that the the ball had crossed the goal line before Limerick had hacked it clear.

Vinny Sullivan gave Waterford United an early lead against Wexford Youths at the RSC. Things went from bad to worse for Wexford when Warren Broaders was dismissed for a two-footed challenge. United continued to dominate but the second goal did not come until 10 minutes into the second half when Willie John Kiely doubled Waterford’s lead. Alan Carey killed off Wexford Youths when he converted a penalty in the 72nd minute.

Three second half goals gave Longford Town a home victory over Finn Harps. The Donegal men had taken an early lead through Johnny Lafferty, and pulled one back in the 78th minute, but two Longford goals from JP McDonagh and another from Peter Hynes delivered a home victory.

A tenth minute goal Austin Skelly for Athlone Town was enough to give the Shannnon-siders the three points from their Airtricity First Division clash Salthill Devon at Drom in Galway.
