UCD AFC Introduction

UCD AFC is a League of Ireland soccer football club based in Belfield, Dublin 4. The club started out life in 1895 as the Catholic University Medical School Cecilia Street Football Club. Following a merger between the Catholic University and University College Dublin in 1908 the club changed it’s name to UCD AFC. The club has played at a variety of football pitches including, Cowper Road, Croyden Park, Fairview, Sandymount, Terenure, and Belfield Park. In 2008 UCD settled in at the UCD Bowl.

Following many decades playing junior and intermediate football UCD was elected to the League of Ireland B Division in 1970. At that time college graduates were not allowed to play for the club and as a consequence UCD lost it’s most famous product Kevin Moran who eventually signed from Pegasus (the UCD graduates club) to Manchester United and went on to play for the Republic of Ireland on 71 occasions.

To date the highlight on the playing pitch for UCD was when the club won the FAI Cup in 1984. UCD beat Shamrock Rovers 2-1 at Dalymount Park in the final. In the Following season UCD were drawn against English cup winners Everton FC in the European Cup Winners Cup competition.

Following a spirited 0-0 draw at Tolka Park the Students lost narrowly 1-0 in the return match at Goodison Park. UCD almost snatched victory on the away goals rule when a late shot grazed the Everton crossbar.

Everton went on to win the European Cup Winners Cup that year.
