Darren Potter – Introduction

Darren Potter was born in Liverpool, England on 21 December 1984. He was on Everton’s books but after he was released by the club Liverpool snapped him up.

Darren Potter & Liverpool

Midfielder Darren Potter made his Liverpool debut on 10 August 2008 in a Champions League tie against Graz AK from Austria. Potter came on after 84 minutes as a substitute for Steve Finnan at the Arnold Schwazernegger Stadion. Liverpool won the match 0-2 courtesy of two goals from Steven Gerrard.

Two weeks later Potter started against the same opposition in the return match at Anfield. Despite losing the match 0-1 Liverpool progressed to the next round on the aggregate score.

Throughout the remainder of the 2004/05 season Potter made for more starts and four more appearances as a substitute. He also warmed the bench on another four

occasions. In total Darren Potter made 17 appearances for the Liverpool first team however he never got his name on the score sheet. Somewhat strangely nine of his 17 appearances came in the Champions League. His last appearance in the first team came when he replaced Steven Gerrard for the last moments of a match against Spain’s Real Betis on 23 November 2005. In January 2007 Darren Potter transferred to Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Darren Potter – Ireland Career

Darren Potter made his debut for Ireland on 23 May 2007 against Ecuador in a friendly match at Giants Stadium, in the USA. It was a largely experimental side that the Irish manager Stephen Staunton sent on to the pitch that day. A goal from Kevin Doyle earned the Irish a 1-1 draw. Potter has won five caps for Ireland and only one of them was in a competitive match. Irish caretaker manager Don Givens sent him on as a very late substitution against Wales at the Millenium Stadium in the final Euro 2008 qualifier. In his five Irish matches he did not manage to end up on the winning side.
