Irish Footballers that Played for Manchester Utd – Michael Keane

Michael Keane – Introduction

Michael Keane was born in Stockport however he qualifies to play for the Republic of Ireland under the so-called Granny Rule. Keane’s father is from Dublin and Michael decided to declare for the Republic and has played at underage representative level. Unusually his twin brother William, a forward, has declared to play for England.

Michael Keane & Manchester United

Michael Keane made his Manchester United debut at just 18 years of age in a 3-0 victory over Aldershot on the 25th October 2011. It was fourth round League Cup tie at the Recreation Ground in front of an attendance of 7,044.

Keane came on as a substitute after 70 minutes along with Ravel Morrison, as replacements for Ezekiel Fryers and Mamae Biram Diouf. United won the match through goals from Dimitar Berbatov, Michael Owen and Antonio Valencia.

Michael Keane – Republic of Ireland Career

Michael Keane has not yet been capped for the senior team however he has been capped at under-17, under-18, and most recently at under-19 level for the Republic of Ireland.

If Michael and his brother William continue their current development and progress there is the possibility that Michael could end up marking his twin brother William if Ireland meet England at some point in the future.

Following a switch of allegiances Keane made his full England debut in March 2017.
